Understanding Moles

“Moles” occur all over the body. Doctors call them nevi or a nevus. Some moles are attractive and even famous, and others some people may wish to have removed. Almost everyone has a spot or a mole they wish remove. These areas can be carefully and finely removed. Then meticulously repaired by a Restorative and Cosmetic Surgeon to minimize the scar.

Occasionally moles may have some premalignancy risk factors to it, in which case they should be sent to laboratory for pathologic review.  Dr. Jacobsen sends these to the pathology laboratory after removal to ensure cancers are not present if need be. Moles are generally not covered by your health insurance. But if your family physician or dermatologist feels the mole or the spot is “suspicious” or thinks skin cancer may otherwise be present. This service may be covered for you.

In the case that neither is covered Dr. Jacobsen has a simple fee schedule to have these removed for you in the office. Everyone, of course, is concerned about the scar left behind. The scar will always be there, but it is our goal to make the blemish as least noticeable as possible to you, your family and friends.

We have a care program to help minimize the appearance of any scarring after your procedure. Excising the mole will leave a blemish, but the intent is to have the scar be less distracting to the eye than the mole itself.  Dr. Jacobsen uses very fine suture material and fine surgical technique to provide this service for you.  However, a great deal of aftercare is ultimately responsible for the end result and healing of your wound.

We have various measures to help you minimize scarring and recovery to leave the most favorable scar possible.  We will show you how to care for the incision and scar to prevent any unfavorable scarring, hypertrophic or keloid scar. Showing you how to massage this area in a firm circular motion and how to utilize vitamin E moisturizing cream and possibly Hydrocortisone. Which can assist in reducing the incidence of any unfavorable hypertrophic scar or keloid.

Vitamin E oil is also effective but can be somewhat messy. As it is quite fluid and can transfer to clothing.  For healing we advise using sunblock, SPF >30 on any portion of the exposed scar to the sun, which may cause hyperpigmentation in an unfavorable way.  Even while indoors or driving. Ultraviolet light can pass through their environment causing hyperpigmentation of the scar. So, it is always important to wear the SPF >30 sunblock.

Larger or longer scars may require a custom silicone pads placed which can be obtained from a local medical supply store or a prosthetic store.  We will give you a brochure for care of the incisional scar management when you come into see us.

Dr. Jacobsen can help you with your mole removal and a finely done repair of your body and skin. The charges for removing the mole start at $600 for 1 mole and $300 for any additional mole. Up to 2 moles to be removed in one sitting in one appointment in our office.

  • review rating 5  Dr J is a kind, compassionate, extremely gifted surgeon. I’ve now had two procedures preformed by him and both he explained and executed beautifully. He is always there to answer questions before and after surgery. You will most likely wait about a hour longer then your expected appointment time but he is definitely worth the wait.

  • review rating 5  I couldn't be happier with my procedure. Dr. J has the most kind and relaxing manner and he is the ultimate professional. I had a fatty tumor on my forehead that he removed, as well as breast reconstruction. The breast reconstruction was overdue as I had breast cancer with multiple lumpectomies, biopsies and radiation. It left the tissue hard and my old implant like a rock. He was able to correct all of the problems and I'm much happier with my appearance. Although you may find it odd at first that you can't get anyone by phone their response time is amazing. I emailed the office on a Sunday afternoon that I had a problem and within ten minutes (no exaggeration) I had a text back that a prescription had been called in to my pharmacy. I've had procedures with other doctors around the Valley and never had an experience more pleasant, nor one which I was happier with the results.

  • review rating 5  Dr. Jacobsen and his entire office staff was a great experience for me. I was referred to his office after my MOHS procedure that left my face in worse shape than I had hoped for. It was a drive across town for me and it was well worth it. I was concerned about the state of the open wound on my face and desired the best outcome possible, I was worried. From the moment I stepped into his office I felt at ease. Several things impressed me with Dr. Jacobsen and his office staff. First and foremost was the ease of communication both directly in office and submitting documents and photos via his website and/or email. The ability to reach out to and get a response from the doctor 24/7 is so nice. Each person I spoke to was helpful and was mindful and sensitive to my needs. Dr. Jacobsen was great, he was very personable, very easy to talk to you, he answered all my questions, and was confident in his skill. I truly felt it was a blessing to be referred to and treated by Dr. Jacobsen. Lastly, Dr. Jacobsen's office is beautifully designed and decorated and includes WIFI, these little things all help with setting the right environment. I left Dr. Jacobsen office in far better shape than when I arrived. His many years of experience is evident in his work.
