Dr. Jacobsen hopes that with his excellent surgical skills and wonderful, attentive, and caring postoperative service that you will not only get the results you want, but also the best breast augmentation in Phoenix.

Before an augmentation it is important to research your plastic surgeon. It is perfectly legal for any doctor to perform plastic surgery in their office. Therefore, you must be careful in choosing a qualified surgeon.

It is important that the American Board of Plastic Surgery certifies your plastic surgeon. Physicians who are boarded by the ABPS have had at least 3 to 6 years of General Surgery and additional 2 or 3 years training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This is a lot of training over many years, and essential to your safety! The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. The ABMS has been around since 1933, and certifies all surgeons including Cardiac Surgeons, Orthopedic Surgeons and other specialties keeping you safe and ensuring you are operated upon by an approved, well trained surgeon. http://www.abms.org/

Once “Board Certified” by the American Board of Plastic Surgery your plastic surgeon becomes eligible to become a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Many “plastic surgeons” have certificates from weekend courses and other non-standard training that are not approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties.“Plastic surgeons” are now creating new boards to that do not require as much experience to appear better to the consumer. Any “board” with the word COSMETIC in it is not approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties!

Also, it is important to see if your plastic surgeon has privileges to perform plastic surgery in a hospital. Hospitals require a plastic surgeon to prove their training by having their boards approved by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Only the American Board of Plastic Surgery is recognized by hospitals. So if the “cosmetic surgeon” you are seeking does not have privileges in a hospital to perform plastic surgery it is very likely your cosmetic surgeon is not properly board certified, and thus not properly trained. It is very important to research your surgeon. Call your cosmetic surgeon and ask: What hospital do you have privileges in to perform plastic surgery, and is your “board certification” approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties?

Every woman should get to have body she desires, which is why Dr. Jacobsen makes it a priority to provide an affordable breast augmentation in Phoenix. Breast augmentation is a wonderful way to augment the breast to give a better shape and contour to the chest wall and to augment the appearance of the shoulders and waistline. Often women with larger hips will look much more balanced and more slim when they are breast size matches their hip size. Breast augmentation can be done simply, usually through incision below the breast to place a saline or gel implant.  This can be done usually within an hour and the patient can go home.  Dr. Jacobsen has created specific instructions to care for yourself after the surgery to ensure you are safe and minimize any chance of complications.

Usually a snug brassiere will be provided for you to wear postoperatively.  The incisions are quite small and are closed with antibiotic infused suture material that will fall out in usually 2 weeks.  The incisions are sealed with Dermabond a cyanoacrylate superglue then sealed the incision so that he can shower the same day. Dr. Jacobsen has very specific postoperative surgical bra to help you recover.  Usually there is an upper pole breast compressive Velcro elastic band that *helps hold the breast implants down into the proper position. As usually postoperatively the pectoralis muscle goes into a temporary spasm, which tend to push the implants too high. This band helps to keep them down into a more favorable position. While you are asleep Dr. Jacobsen is able to position your implants where they should be, but once you wake up the muscle then begins to contract or spasm. Sometimes pushing the implant superiorly or higher on your chest wall. The goal is to get the implants to drop, so to speak, down into the proper position and to relax the muscle as much as possible. For this reason, Valium, a muscle relaxant, will be proscribed for the first few days postoperatively. Allowing the pectoralis muscle to relax and allow the implant to fall into the correct position. The muscle relaxant also helps to prevent postoperative pain, which is usually related not to the surgery or the incisions themselves, but usually the spasms that occur in the pectoralis muscle. Valium used cautiously can be used to alleviate the symptoms associated with this. As in all his services Dr Jacobsen strives to provide a high-value, affordable breast augmentation available in Phoenix, without cutting any corners on service, quality, outcome or great results.

It is natural to be concerned about procedure related scarring.  Scars on the breasts were not meant to be, and it would be best if no woman ever experienced breast scarring. That being said, Dr. Jacobsen and his office have found that women who undergo breast breast procedures very rarely (if ever) regret the scar.  Fortunately, on the female breast it is very rare that a keloid scar occurs.  Dr. Jacobsen makes sure that scar is well away from any visible area that would show with normal clothing, bathing suit or brassiere.  Most of the appropriate incisions for breast enhancement surgery, breast lift or augmentation are done on the lower part of the breast below the bra line and above the lower part of the brassiere so that they cannot be seen.  Usually the scars fade nicely with time.  Others in your life will not see the scars in regular circumstances, and are only seen in a dimly the room with your partner.

Scarring is a trade-off for your enhancement of your breast, but in the long experience of Dr. Jacobsen, he and his staff have noticed that women very rarely regret having small scars in the breast to achieve the enhancement that they desire.  Once the enhancement is complete, the issue of the scar becomes much less prominent in patient’s mind because the breast looks so much better overall, and the scar does not become a distraction because the breast becomes much more satisfying and appealing after surgery.  It is our hope that you will be satisfied with the outcome of your surgery and that the scarring does not impact your satisfaction.

The only implant available to first time augmentation patients in the United States is the saline implant or the silicone gel implant. Dr. Jacobsen uses Mentor Implants round and high profile. The shell of the implant is a strong silicone elastomer shell. The implant is filled with sterile saline at the time of surgery. Mentor’s new high and ultra-high-profile implant gives an excellent result with less roundness, more natural contour and more subtle projection. High profile implants have been very effective in lessening the change of lateral rippling and avoiding a flattened look to the augmented breast.

We will show you the implants. We have various implants that you can touch and feel. You will get a sense of what you want better once you have seen them and felt them. They are very sophisticated very highly engineered and safe. There are other companies that have breast implants. The other companies are Allegan and Sientra. We work with all of these implants but prefer at this time to support the Mentor implant which has excellent patient follow-up service and warranty. You will see once you have felt and seen these implants that they are very safe and structurally resilient. These are the most studied medical device in the history of mankind. More women have been studied and followed up with breast implants and any other kind of medical device including pacemakers and total knee joints and brain shunts and heart valves. 100s of thousands of women throughout the developed world have participated in this very long-term extensive study of these devices for the last 20 years.

Implants are placed under the muscle, helping to prevent a rippling effect, lowering risk of capsular contractures, better mammogram detection, and a lower risk of bottoming out (this will be discussed in risks) and basically look a lot more natural!

The most common incisions are the transaxillary (armpit crease), inframammary fold (under the breast). Dr. Jacobsen prefers the transaxillary or the inframammary incisions, depending on patient preference. Sometimes the inframammary incision is required for the patient as more “correction” and “adjustments” can be made through this incision particularly for the ladies that have had children and have developed some droop or ptosis. Dr. Jacobsen does not perform the TUBA operation which is through the belly button which he feels significantly reduces the control and refinement of the breast implant positioning. Dr. Jacobsen uses the areolar incision only in specialty situations.

Every patient’s main concern is size. No one wants to be too big! We spend more time speaking with patients regarding their size than any other issue! It is hard to determine for you what the term cc’s mean. One patient with a 425cc implant will be a full C where another patient with the same implant will be a D. This depends on the body type, frame, weight and height of the patient. Implants look large, but remember that it is going under the muscle. It is very important that we find a size that you wish to be. We are not successful because we make breasts bigger and bigger. We are successful because we make women happy. It is very important to us that we find exactly the size that you will be comfortable with. Pictures are very helpful when you are discussing size with Dr. Jacobsen. Find pictures on the Internet or and magazines that show women of your body size and shape that shows breast size is that you wish to emulate. Keep in mind that almost every woman that comes to us tends to under estimate the size that she wishes to be. Most women feel that a D cup is too much for them. Frankly however we have found that the D cup brassiere size for most women is a nice versatile size that can be dressed up very nicely if you choose and can be dressed down and hidden very nicely in a professional situation at work where most women do not wish to be noticed as having had a breast augmentation. Our web site here has many before and after photographs that you can utilize and choose but there are many other plastic surgery web sites and many magazines that have pictures of ladies breasts that you can bring with you to communicate with us. We would prefer that you do not try to guess her dictate the size or cc’s of the implant that you think you will need. We moreover prefer that you give us an idea of the look that you wish to have. We are very comfortable choosing the size for you that will fit your body size, your lifestyle and the look that you wish to achieve. Keep in mind that we will not make you too big! You will ultimately be very happy with your size if we communicate well together. Our ladies are very happy and we believe that it is a result of good communication. If there is any complaint the ladies have with regard to their size after the operation it is moreover this: “I wish I would have gone bigger!” This usually occurs after a month or so that ladies realize that their breast augmentation is not obvious to other people in their lives. We have become very good at predicting the size and shape that will fit your body nicely and spend a great deal of time talking with patients so we don’t hear the “I wish I would have gone bigger” too often anymore. Bring pictures with you to your consultation!

Prescriptions will be given to you beforehand so you can have them filled and ready at home. Specific post operative orders will be given as well. Our nurse will go over ALL the instructions with you prior to your surgery. You will be given Rxs for antibiotics, pain medication and Valium which helps reduce the muscle spasm in the chest and as a result you may require less pain medication. You will be sent home wearing an elastic breast band (a picture of this band will be given at the time of your consult) worn 23 out of 24 hours a day for a couple of days after your surgery. It is quite snug fitting. On your first post operative visit we will fit you with a more comfortable single band. This keeps your implants in the correct position after surgery. It is important that you have help at home. You need to relax, take your pain medications and make this your time. Keep a glass full of some liquid with a straw close to your bed or chair to sip on frequently. You will be able to shower the next day. Your incision is protected with surgical glue called DermaBond and Steri-Strips which sometimes stay on for 2 or 3 weeks. You can shower the day after surgery safely. Make sure someone will be there with you to prevent you from falling should you become weak or unbalanced in the shower. Remember that we want you to take a week off from work. You may increase your activity as you wish. You can walk or use the elliptical but jogging is not advisable for approximately 2 weeks and only when wearing a snug-jogging bra. We do not want you to do pectoral exercises for several weeks. We will explain these limitations to you in detail. Dr. Jacobsen has a full list of postoperative instructions to guide you through your postoperative period. We will go over these with you at length prior to your surgery. Dr. Jacobsen and his nurse, Denise, are always available to answer your phone calls any time 24 hours a day seven days a week after your surgery. Frankly however we received very few phone calls from our patients because they are so well-informed and the medications we prescribe work very well to get our patients through the early postoperative period.

It is our office policy to give you your prescriptions or call them into your pharmacy before your surgery. We prescribe a pain medication and also a muscle relaxant, Valium, to take for muscle spasms which reduce the need for pain medication. A great deal of your pain after the procedure is due to the stretching of the muscle as it adapts to a foreign object.

Yes! We feel this pain pump works fabulously for patients! This significantly reduces the amount of narcotics you will need to take after the operation which leaves your mind quite clear as taking narcotic medications can give you a foggy feeling when you’re awake. The device placed continuously delivers pain medication directly to the area under the muscle where most of the pain comes from. Very tiny tubes called catheters, placed at the end of the surgery are worn for 2 to 3 days to deliver the medication which is a numbing medicine commonly used in dentistry and surgery. It is completely portable with the pump carried in a fanny pack. The pump is not to get wet. We can show you want to you when you come for your consultation. The tubes are so small they cannot be felt when coming out in our office. Our ladies that have used this device have all been very happy with it.

It is very rare that saline implants deflate. If it does you will know as the saline from the implant will be absorbed quickly into your blood stream at no harm to you and one breast will be much smaller than the other! The implants are very resilient though, as you can just about literally stand on them on the floor without them bursting. In Dr. Jacobsen’s career, he has not had a patient who has ruptured their implant from a fall or a car accident. Most of the deflations that occur are seemingly random and never are explained. Breast implants are not considered a lifetime device but can last a life time. The Mentor Corporation offers a limited lifetime warranties. You will be given a copy of this warranty at your initial visit. If your implant fails the Mentor Corporation in our experience has been very good with patients by providing a replacement implant at no charge to the patient.

This is a very rare complication. When implants are said to “bottom out” it means they descend too low on the chest, raising the nipples up too high. This is prevented by the surgical procedure being done properly and by the postoperative banding and replaced under your breast that you will wear for a number of days after the surgery. This is much less common when the implant is placed behind the muscle which supports the implant nicely. To correct this problem another surgery must be performed placing sutures to correct the position of the pocket to bring the implant up into the proper position.

This is rare but can occur. This can be caused by under filling the implant and also in a very thin patient with very little breast tissue. It makes sense if you think about it that the more percent of your breast that is represented by breast implant the more likely that you will feel the breast implant. A woman that already has a C cup breast size will not feel the breast implant or any folds in the breast implant if she has augmented to a D cup breast size because the implant is covered by so much of her own breast tissue. On the other hand if you are quite thin and the implant represents more than 90% of your overall breast volume is likely that you will feel some of the breast implant in some positions on your breast or in some postures that you assume. If it occurs it usually occurs on the lateral side of the breast that is covered by your bra or bikini. It is usually most noticeable when ladies bend over at the hips and their breasts are dangling from the chest without support. Frankly however this does not bother most women until it becomes severe which very rarely happens. Placing the implant under the muscle and filling it to its required volume is advised to avoid this problem. Occasionally, a few days after the surgery, patients notice some rippling on the sides of their breast, usually the implants settle into their pocket, however, and the rippling diminishes. This is rarely seen in the parts of the breast that are exposed such as your cleavage. Rippling can be caused by capsular contracture as well. The capsular care contracture can be prevented by massage postoperatively which we will instruct you upon.

About 20 percent of women will form a capsule around their breast implant. But this can be prevented. Since your breast implant is considered a foreign object by your body, it naturally forms a lining of scar tissue around this object. The scar becomes more fibrous and tightens around the implant. This is called capsule formation. As it tightens and squeezes the implant, the implant becomes hard, painful and has a ball-like appearance. To fix this problem an open capsulotomy needs to be performed surgically. In this procedure the surgeon will enter pocket and score or cut the scar tissue (capsulotomy). He may remove the scar tissue (capsulectomy) completely. The capsulectomy is very effective at restoring the shape and softness of the breast. How do we try and prevent this capsule from occurring? First the capsule is largely prevented by placing the implant under the muscle. Secondly, capsules are prevented by doing postoperative massaging of your breasts. We will discuss and demonstrate how to massage your breasts and implants about 10-14 days after surgery. We recommend massaging your breasts every day in the shower to prevent this from occurring. Frankly most women we’ll never get a capsular contracture of the breast even if they do not massage their breasts. But you will not know if you are prone to capsules until you have one. As a result we recommend that all women aggressively massage their breast each morning to stretch the scar and fight the natural tendency of the scar that your body forms around your breast from contracting into a tight capsule. We will counsel you on these techniques.

Occasionally there is a temporary loss of sensation in the nipple or in the breast itself usually on the lateral or side of the breast. This occurs as the nerve is stretched and bruised just like your muscle and skin are after surgery. The nerve tends to shut down temporarily when it is swollen or bruised. This may take from a few days to several weeks or months to subside. It is very rare to entirely lose the sensation in the nipple. The risk of sensory loss goes up slightly if there is a dramatic increase in the breast size with augmentation. There is also a risk that the breasts or nipple are over sensitive for a period of time as you heal.

The goal is for your breast to be symmetric. We want to look the same on both sides. Keep in mind though that is rare that any woman’s breasts are exactly symmetric. Dr. Jacobsen tries to correct asymmetry you had prior to surgery with the breast augmentation surgery by modifying the placement of your breast implants and slightly the volume in each breast implant. But it is very important to realize that even the most beautiful of models in this world do not have exactly symmetric breasts. But you will be very close and we believe you will be very happy.

Nausea is rare in our ladies after surgery. We spend a great deal of effort to prevent nausea in our ladies. We do not want you to be nauseated! Nausea and vomiting can cause you to have more pain and possibly even bleeding! Many patients have stories of previous anesthesia and surgical experiences were they have had nausea that has been a memorable problem for them either from child birth experiences or previous surgery they may have had. The anesthesiologists that we work with work with us as a team to ensure you do not have nausea. You are treated with a number of medications prior to you waking up to prevent nausea. We find consistently no nausea in our patients postoperatively. Even with ladies that have previously has nausea with other surgery. The most important factor however in preventing nausea is what you can do for yourself after surgery. Keep yourself well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Drink about 8 ounces every hour while you are awake. The most common cause of nausea is not indeed the anesthesia but it is dehydration. The first symptom of dehydration is nausea. Drink, drink, drink…this is the key to avoiding nausea. We recommend you purchase straws that have a bending elbow on them so you can drink from your bedside table without having to bend forward. We have possibly two or three patients a year with post-operative nausea. We will do EVERYTHING in our power to make sure that you have NO NAUSEA and that if you do it will be treated properly.

It is best that you do not take aspirin or any nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) for 7 to 10 days prior to your surgery. Examples of nonsteroidal inflammatory drugs include Aleve, Nuprin, Motrin, Naprosyn, ibuprofen and many other trade names for similar medications. These medications can cause postoperative bleeding and excessive bruising. You also should avoid any diet aides whatsoever for three weeks prior to surgery. Some of these diet aides even though they may be herbal in nature and may be natural products sold to you through a pharmacy or throughout health food store may contain products that can render your heart irritable during the anesthesia causing you to have cardiologic complications. If you are taking any diet aide whatsoever you should reveal them to us so that we can assess them for you and determine if it would be any risk to you during the surgery.

You will be entirely asleep during the operation. Surgery is performed in an outpatient facility under general anesthesia. It is important that you are entirely asleep. Your pectoral muscles must be relaxed in order to place the implants and shape them properly into the pocket to give you an excellent result. General anesthesia Dr. Jacobsen feels is essential to a beautiful result for your breasts. Usual surgery time is one hour, sometimes a little longer.

You will be placed under general anesthetic by a board certified entirely qualified anesthesiologist with an impeccable background and credentials here in Phoenix. Dr. Jacobsen does not use nurses for the anesthesia but only board certified anesthesiologists. Dr. Jacobsen has done thousands of cases with these specific anesthesiologists and has the utmost confidence and these anesthesiologists. These anesthesiologists have enough competence and confidence by Dr. Jacobsen that he has allowed them to anesthetize his own family members.

Swelling is a normal occurrence after any surgery; it will dissipate in several days to 2 weeks. We ask that you sleep with your head and chest elevated on several pillows to help minimize this problem.

Dr. Jacobsen prides himself on his ladies having minimal bruising. Occasionally ladies will have bruising. It will usually subside within the first week and certainly by the second week. If the bruising is firm and looks dramatic notify Dr. Jacobsen’s office. This could be a hematoma, an area of bleeding around the surgical site. This may be resolve without surgical intervention but occasionally a patient will need to return to the operating room to have the hematoma (blood collection) drained.

It is very rare to have significant bleeding from the operation. All operations have inherently the risk of bleeding after the operation. Dr. Jacobsen and his staff pride themselves on having very few patients that bleed after the operations. This very important that you limit your activity as directed by the postoperative instructions and we give you as straining or returning to normal activity too early can cause bleeding. The elastic Velcro straps that we place on your chest during surgery you will help considerably to prevent bleeding as well. Bleeding can occur to the point we are breast feels quite stretched out. This may require a second operation to open the incision and to remove the blood clots and to close the breast incision again. This may require you to return to the SurgiCenter so it is very important that you let us know if your breast is swelling excessively on one side of the other. Also you must limit your activity as we have directed. Keep in mind again at this is very rare complication!

Dr. Jacobsen does not believe this occurs from breast augmentation. If you already have stretch marks present from pregnancy, breastfeeding, etc., the implants may help them fill out, making them a little less noticeable, but they certainly do not worsen them in any way.

This is an important issue for many active women. After a few days you may start walking or using the elliptical trainer which eliminates the impact potion of running or jogging. You should not jog, run or use the treadmill for 2 weeks. You should avoid any weight lifting that uses the pectoral muscles. This will tend to push you implants high on your chest when you are trying to get them to settle down into a nice natural position. Any time you exercise you must remember to wear a snug fitting jog bra. Some ladies wear 2 jog bras to help secure your breasts during vigorous exercise or some wear a Lycra body suit as well. We will let you know when you can return to pectoral exercises.

You may generally return to work generally in a week’s time. You should not have breast augmentation surgery unless you have a week to take off from your work… no matter what sort of work that you do. If you work at a desk or in a corporate position where you do not have the lift anything heavier than 5 lbs. you can likely return to work in work full days work in 7 to 10 days. If you have the lift and do manual labor such as a nurse might have to do to lift patients or a bartender might have to lift at her place of work or as a policewoman might have to lift or exert herself at her place of work you may need two full weeks off your work. Keep in mind this is only for the primary first-time augmentation subsequent operations you have on your breasts require much less recovery time.

Small children can be lifted after about 10 days after your surgery. Dr. Jacobsen has children and understands that small children’s need to be lifted will remain the matter how much discomfort you may be having in your chest. The best way to satisfy your children’s needs is to sit down on the couch and have the child crawl up on the couch and then on your lap. This will give your child the satisfaction that they need to be held by you and will not threaten your breast surgery or do the pain as you will not have to lift the child directly from the floor as we often do as parents.

If you are doing well and have had no complications, which are generally the case, you can fly an airplane out of town the day following surgery.

It is imperative that you have help at home after surgery. If you have no help at all you should either stay overnight at the SurgiCenter for one or two nights, though generally everybody can get some sort help either from their family or from their friends. The first day after your surgery you will need somebody to bring you plenty of fluids to drink and to care for you and to help you with your medications and help you in and out of bed and to get dressed. By the second or third day you’ll need less and less help at home. But it is very important that you get your home arranged in your life or arranged prior to surgery by paying all of your bills, cleaning your home, getting your laundry done, putting gas in your car and generally arranging your home so that you have to do very little if anything for the first few days after your surgery.

Most of the plastic surgery procedures Dr. Jacobsen are done at the St Joseph’s Hospital Outpatient SurgiCenter in Phoenix which is at 3rd Street and Thomas Road in Phoenix. This SurgiCenter has excellent staff an excellent safety record. . It is also very private for ladies and if needed provides an overnight center to recover in.

Most women need no testing at all. The SurgiCenter will require a pregnancy test prior to your surgery for which they will gather a urine sample for you when you arrive. If you are 40 years of age or older you’ll need a screening mammogram prior to your surgery. If you have any family history of breast cancer you will need a mammogram regardless of your age. We can set this up for you. If you are young and healthy and have no medical history is unlikely that you will require any tests prior to surgery at all. If you’re adding liposuction section to your surgical procedure you’ll need a few basic blood tests and a pregnancy test. If you have any medical history at all with regard to your heart or any major organ disease including diabetes or other problems including hypertension you may need electrocardiogram and other basic blood tests. You may also need some of your medical records. Please bring your medical records with you and contact data to your family physician so that we can obtain the appropriate medical records so that your surgical procedure can be done safely.

This question is asked of us many times. Pamela Anderson has a fabulous chest but is a bit too much of a dramatic look for most women. Most women are worried about being too big and referred to Pamela Anderson as bigger than they wish to be. Pamela Anderson has a specific look which she carries off very well however most women wish a somewhat more conservative look then hers. You will not have the prominent breast appearance that Pamela Anderson has unless you wish it. It is important that you bring photographs with you or point out the women in my web site that you feel give you the best look for your body style. We do not make woman TOO BIG! It is our intent to make you happy and comfortable with your size and balance your body out nicely with your breast size. Big for the sake of big is usually not what women want.

You can wear a bra usually about a week after the surgery. During the first week you can wear a plastic sports or jog bra. Is important that whatever bra you wear it does not push you breast up as we are attempting over the first few weeks to have your breast settle into a nice refined and natural position. The brassiere can often push the breasts upward then reversing the effect that we wish to obtain over the first few weeks. We will guide you through this in the postoperative period.

You can go out a dress anytime that you wish. As long as you’re comfortable there is no medical reason you cannot wear a dress to dinner the day after surgery. It is just important that you’re feeling well and up to do so. You will be swollen and likely won’t want to go out to dinner for a few days. Your dress will fit differently after a week or two than it does the day after surgery as well. You may need support to feel comfortable the first 2 weeks after surgery though. Also you will need to wear the elastic band we give you for 1 to 2 weeks to refine the position and shape of your breasts.

You really should not drive until you’ve been entirely off your narcotics for 24 hours. You will feel as though you can physically drive just fine but the concern is for your safety. Certainly you will be able to physically get into your car, steer the car, start the car, and move the car. But if you get into an emergeny situation on the road, you may find that because of the discomfort in your chest he may not be able to quickly avert an accident. We will help you decide when you can drive, but usually it’s a good week before you will feel safe driving any further than just in your neighborhood.

You do not always have to wear a bra. There will be many garments that you will want to wear that do not require a bra. It is okay if you wish to wear a dress without a bra or a strapless dress without a bra. You can wear a tank top without a bra if you wish as well. However, it is very important that you wear support most of the time during most of the day during most of your activities of daily living. The more you wear a bra the more likely that your breasts will last a long time and you will not develop sag or droop of your breasts over time. You will not develop droop or sag in your breasts if you wear support most of the time. You should even wear support at bed with some sort of garment that holds your breast up. As you might have noticed when you lie on your back that your breasts, when they’re full, will tend to pull to the sides. When you are sleeping on your side, the breast will droop to that side. Over the years this will stretch your breast skin. That’s why it’s so important that you wear something to support your breasts even in bed. Certainly there will be times and places you cannot or do not wish to wear a bra. This is fine, but remember that overall you will want to wear as much support as often as you can.

This is an advertising gimmick that Dr. Jacobsen feels is a disservice to women. Breast augmentation requires a full week to recover from properly. Any surgeon that claims 24 hour recovery is dishonest and should be avoided.

No. Remember that the breast augmentation procedure is done behind your breast. There is no surgery done on the breast tissue itself or on the nipple or the ducts leading to the nipple that would potentially affect breast feeding. As a result breast-feeding is not affected by breast augmentation placed behind the breast tissue. Dr. Jacobsen does not use generally the incision around the nipple for breast augmentation as this requires dissection through some of the milk ducts at the nipple level and could cause some problems with breast-feeding in the future.

Breast augmentation does not affect your mammogram. The mammogram that is performed for ladies with breast augmentation requires two extra views. Almost all mammography centers now are familiar with the additional views that are required to see all of the breast tissue on the mammogram. This has been worked out over the last 10 or 15 years very nicely and the American Academy of Clinical Radiologists now has a formal protocol and standard of care for mammography for patients with breast augmentation. All the scientific literature to date reveals that there is no loss of mammographic efficiency in detecting early breast cancer in the early screening for breast cancer because of breast implants.

No one will see your photographs preoperatively or postoperatively except you and anybody that you designate. In my office only my nurse, Denise, and myself will see your photographs. They are protected on my computer and are not printed out or published anywhere without your separate permission.

Only women that have given us specific and separate permission to use their photographs are displayed on the web site. You will not end up on our web site without your knowledge and specific written permission. We do appreciate all of the women who allow us to use their before and after images on the web site, but we understand that some women aren’t comfortable with this. If you look at the web site, you will see that all identifying jewelry clothing hair and skin tone are made homogenous and removed so that you will not be recognized.

You can shower the next day after your surgery. You are waterproof because Dr. Jacobsen uses medical glue called “DermaBond” on your incisions. You cannot go into a bathtub or a Jacuzzi however for approximately 10 days but you can freely take a shower and pat yourself dry the day after your surgery. The brown flesh, colored Steri-Strips are glued with DermaBond directly over your incisions and will stay on for sometimes two to three weeks. The longer they stay on the better. They protect your incision from stretch and give a very nice fine line in our patients. You will like the fact that your incision is well protected while they are healing and sensitive.

All of your stitches are done under your skin and are absorbed by your body. There are no stitches that need to be removed.

You will not have drains after your breast augmentation surgery. Drains are only placed for breast reconstruction surgery and other special circumstances in other types of breast surgery.

Ice can be comforting but you must be careful with it. The skin of your breast sometimes loses some of their sensation after the surgery because of the swelling after the surgery. The ice can cause you to be burned by the coldness that you may not perceive because of your temporary loss of sensation. We do not recommend ice unless you are very careful with it.

Almost none of our ladies have complained of unfavorable scars. There has been just a small group of patients where we have had to revise their scars in our office. Once the Steri-Strips come off, we will give you instructions on how to massage your scars and how to prevent them from becoming unfavorable. Vitamin E creams work nicely after the glue has sloughed off.

This is entirely untrue! We hear this frequently from our patients but the implants can last a lifetime! But generally speaking you may wish to have them replaced in ten years but it will not be for a medical reason. More likely it will be for reasons of a cosmetic nature. You will want to change your shape or size as we all age or have children, etc. But the implants are very durable and can last a lifetime. They generally last longer than other medical implants like, heart valves, pacemakers, knee joints, etc.

This may most likely be due to the skin stretching. You may apply lotion to your breasts to sooth them. Be careful not to get the lotion on the incisions until we tell you it is ok to do so.

They will be healing properly if there is no redness, pain, heat at the incision site or drainage from the site. If you have any of these symptoms, you should call Dr. Jacobsen’s office right away.

This depends on the patient, as some ladies’ implants settle down and drop into the final position in a week, and other women drop in 3 to 4 weeks. We usually have you wear it 2 to 4 weeks, less number of hours a day as each week goes by. Usually by the 2nd week ladies are wearing the band only at night.

This also depends on the patient, but in two weeks you will be close to your final shape and position and will know for the most part how you are going to look as most of the swelling will be gone by then. Usually in 2 to 3 months they are positioned where they will stay and your final refined shape and contour will be stable and beautiful!!!

We feel that there is a 50 percent chance in your lifetime that you may have another breast surgery. This may not be caused by a complication, but moreover by your desire to have a breast lift or change the size or shape of your implants. Most patients decide to have larger implants over time.

Insurance will not pay for a cosmetic procedure. If you have a physical deformity or you are a mastectomy patient, insurance may pay for this procedure, but it is always important to check with your insurance first.

Breast augmentation and breast lifts occasionally require revisions. Not frequently, but occasionally. These revisions incur costs including the anesthesiologists fees, the SurgiCenter fees and the surgical fee for Dr. Jacobsen’s services. These are your responsibility entirely. There are times when Dr. Jacobsen feels there are revisions that are requested by the patient that can be performed with partial waving of the surgical fees. However this is only in the early post-operative period, usually within the first month or so after your surgery. Women breasts can sag after implant surgery, come together in the middle or become asymmetric over time. This can occur if the breasts are not supported properly or if your skin is thin or has previously sagged or if you choose larger breast implants. This can particularly be a risk if larger, more dramatic implants sizes are used which create more stress on the skin of the breasts. We will instruct you on how to care for your breasts properly to avoid some of the stress that can cause these problems. But breasts do require maintenance. Only you can maintain your breasts! Surgical enhancement of the breasts can be fabulous and certainly that is our goal but it can be disappointing if your breasts sag again and come together in the middle after your surgery. These abnormalities after surgery are not a result of poorly done surgery. They are a result of the stresses on your breast tissue that cannot be controlled by Dr. Jacobsen. These can only be controlled and minimized by your diligence and proper support of your breasts to preserve your new look.

Pregnancy, breast feeding, weight loss, hormonal changes and the normal aging process causes the breast to sag or droop. This occurs in every woman eventually. You may need to have a breast lift along with your augmentation. This will be discussed at length with you at your consultation. We have found that some women who have a slight amount of sagging (ptosis) have excellent results by placing a fuller or larger implant which raises the nipples up to some significant degree if the operation is performed properly. If a breast lift is necessary, Dr. Jacobsen uses a modified incision, called a ‘Vertical Mammoplasty’, saving the patient a large and undesirable scar. This operation uses a “lollipop incision” which is circle around the nipple and a line straight down on the lateral part of the breast all of which is covered by your brassiere. Dr. Jacobsen does not recommend the “anchor incision” which is commonly used for breast lifts elsewhere. These extensive incisions are unnecessary in Dr. Jacobsen’s opinion and make revisions in the future risky as the blood supply to the breast tissue is changed unfavorably. Our ladies have been very happy with their incisions and the way they have healed for them.

You will not wake up during the operation!!! You are fully monitored and your depth of anesthesia ensured. You will not WAKE UP in the middle of the operation and feel everything but cannot move! These exceedingly rare reports you hear on the news occasionally are dramatic and terrifying to patients but frankly do not happen when the patient is properly cared for by qualified anesthesiologists. Dr. Jacobsen works with anesthesiologists that he had worked with for eight years and have done thousands of operations together. These anesthesiologists have put Dr. Jacobsen’s family and staff to sleep as well !!! You will be safely taken care of.

We have never seen this complication but hear about it a lot from patients. The implant will be placed correctly by Dr. Jacobsen and will not fall under your armpit! This complication apparently occurred with implants placed under the breast but not under the muscle and placed poorly. Implants are always placed under the muscle by Dr. Jacobsen and centered under your nipple properly.

No!!! Your entire breast will be larger but the nipples or the areola itself will not inherently get bigger. Sometimes the nipples and areola appear smaller as they now are a smaller percentage of the overall visual appearance of the breasts after augmentation.

No! The second operation if you need one is usually not painful at all. Women usually return to work in 2 to 3 days and use very little pain medicine if any at all. Second operation to either go bigger or to remove capsule or to replace deflated implants are usually very easily tolerated by ladies. We call these “nuisance operations” because you do have to go to sleep with anesthesia for the operation but you will wake up will very little discomfort. We give all these ladies pain medicine but it is rare that they actually use any other than Naprosyn or Motrin. The first under the muscle breast augmentation does hurt however!!!

We have had many patients from out of state. Usually you can fly back the next day after we have examined you post-operatively in our office if everything is OK. But most ladies stay in town 2 or 3 days in a hotel or with a friend or family member.

Converting from over the muscle to under the muscle usually doesn’t not work out well at all in Dr. Jacobsen’s experience. If your skin is already stretched from your implant and muscle is not stretched then placing an implant then under the muscle will give you a unfavorable appearance as there will be more skin than muscle. The implant can be placed partially under the upper portion of the muscle however to help smooth out the upper portion of the breast. But your breasts can be made to look very favorable with other techniques. Typically removing the capsule around your present implant and placing a silicine implant in its place will usually give a softer more naturally shaped breast that you will like much better.

Victoria’s Secret is always a good place to go. Ladies seem to get good service there. But they have very limited selection in full D or DD brassiere cup sizes. Macy’s and Dillard’s have nice selections of full sized brassieres. Probably the most comprehensive selection can be found at figleaves.com. Here you will find all sorts of brassieres in full sizes, and excellent service as well. www.figleaves.com

Your implants are rugged! Dr. Jacobsen has never seen in his practice a breast implant rupture from a car accident, a fall, or rough handling. Dr. Jacobsen demonstrates during the consultation how he can stand on the implant and it will not rupture. So you do not have to reduce your activity at all to protect your implant.

Over 200,000 women have participated in Mentor studies in order to provide a significant body of clinical evidence demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of silicone breast implants. Mentor remains committed to providing objective, clinical information about breast implant safety to drive an informed choice and give women beautiful results.

Fortunately, the scientific community respects our commitment to safety. Both MENTOR® MemoryGel® Breast Implants and MENTOR® MemoryShape® Breast Implants are FDA approved for breast augmentation. The Institute of Medicine, in a highly respected study, concluded that: “There is no evidence that silicone implants are responsible for any major diseases of the whole body. Women are exposed to silicone constantly in their daily lives.”1

Silicone breast implants have undergone changes over time to meet increasingly sophisticated consumer expectations. The first silicone breast implants used thick shells and contained firm gel. The second generation of implants (introduced in the late 1970’s) had thinner shells and used less firm gel to address concerns of patients and surgeons who believed that implants were too firm, palpable and visible.

In the mid 1980’s, concerns related to rupture rates of the second generation thinner-shelled implants led manufacturers to introduce a third generation of implants. The shell and gel of these implants are slightly thicker but still soft.

Today, these third generation silicone gel-filled breast implants are typically referred to as cohesive gel implants. Mentor’s products have kept pace with the ever-evolving expectations of surgeons and women who desire a safe, soft gel to retain the natural feel that resembles actual breast tissue.

The amount of silicone material released from silicone breast implants is extremely minimal. In fact, it is less than what is absorbed from daily consumer products containing silicone.1

Over 200,000 women have participated in Mentor’s studies in order to provide a significant body of clinical evidence demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of silicone-filled breast implants.

As we have to date, Mentor remains committed to providing objective, clinical information about breast implant safety resulting in beautiful benefits.

  • Dr. J has an amazing personality and the surgery was quick, painless, and perfect. I didn’t even need to take any painkillers after I woke up. I look and feel so much better. Would highly recommend him to anyone considering surgery. The staff was also incredibly easy to work with. All around great office energy and the medical staff at the surgery center are so sweet.

  • I’m 9 days post op and I’m very happy with the results so far (still healing). Dr. J is easy to talk to. I went in for a consult and was able to schedule the procedure for the very next week. All went very well. I was so afraid to remove the bandages - I was expecting a bloody/bruised mess. I was pleasantly surprised to see tiny incisions with no scabbing or bruising. I’m very impressed.

  • Enjoyed meeting and working with Dr. J. I had an eye lift and it was a pleasant experience from start to finish. Dr. J’s bed side manner is very personable and genuine. He explained everything step by step and made the procedure very painless. Even though I’m from Minnesota - I will be coming to Dr. J for any future cosmetic surgical needs. I cannot recommend Dr. J enough.

  • What a brilliant human! I’m so thankful for finding this amazing genius. I’ve struggled with skin sagging since my weight loss surgery. My arms were my nemesis, I have other skin removal surgeries to have in the future but my arms were really my starting point and I had went to try to freeze the remaining stubborn fat and skin to hopefully shrink. Yeah that didn’t work. Then I found this guy, he’s awesome, his staff is awesome and professional and I cannot say thank you enough to this life changing leap into the rest of my journey. I truly and blessed to have had the opportunity to be able to experience the joy he has for his craft. He has truly changed my life. Thank you Dr. J.

  • I, Theresa Buschbacher, prepared this review and submitted it on my husband,s account. Superb, Excellent, Caring, Compassionate, Knowledgeable, Experienced, these are all descriptive terms that one must earn. Dr.J has completely filled the requirements of each and every of these terms and they can all equally be applied to him. His knowledge immediately puts you at ease (and when what he says will happen does actually happen, you get a big smile inside and you know you have a relationship with an excellent doctor)! Now for the support staff, they relate to you and express a genuine concern for what you are going through. They work with you and put you at ease while accomplishing what is needed for the “business end” of the doctor’s office. This is a WINNER!!

  • This will be a long review but worth the read! I'm beyond impressed with the overall quality, cleanliness, prices, customer service and results. First impressions, their branding of their classy theme provided an elegance that I felt right at home. I felt like a king who was going to get the best treatment! Secondly, very clean... I mean this place was immaculate! You can tell these folks worked hard to build their business and put in the work to upkeep it! As a business owner myself I applaud the way they conduct their business and never loose their family values, that caring, compassionate, family oriented value that most businesses start off with but loose over time. I can tell that money is not their passion. Their customers results are, the smiles and cries one has when they see their results. I was terrified of anesthesia, and when I expressed my concerns about my PTSD the surgeon, anesthesiologist and staff all took the time to sit with me and listen to me then proceed with a break down of how well they were going to take care of me and make sure I have the best experience possible. In which I certainly did! And best part I didn't wake up out of it, scared, panicking or anything like that. I was a little tired of course, but I went live for my fans soon as I got in the car. I felt comfortable the entire time I was waiting and when my nerves were really high I was honest and told them. They put in the extra love to make sure I was ok. When I went back and they gave me whatever magical cocktail, I felt as my procedure was 4 seconds. I didn't wake up during surgery, didn't hear anything nor wake up in pain! Everything they could have possibly done right they absolutely did! I felt safe too. And when I had questions after they were great about responding and following up. The cleanliness was great, and they took all precautions during this time of COVID-19. I knew the day I met Dr. Jacobson during my consultation that he had to be my surgeon! I hope this review helps viewers make that final decision on choosing Dr. Jacobson as their surgeon and if anyone has questions you are more then welcome to ask and I will answer to the best of my abilities? Thank you Dr. Jacobson and your staff?? my results are incredible! And I'm not even fully healed yet and I can't stop staring at my chest! It's a dream come true and it wouldn't have be possible without you and your staff. God bless!

  • Dr J is absolutely brilliant. His office and staff are out of this world and his demeanor is so friendly and up beat. He makes you feel like you are in the best possible hands... And you are! The Surgeon I met with before I saw Dr J told me I would need a general anesthetic for my surgery and likely a skin graft. I was terrified. Went to Dr J for a second opinion and he was totally nonchalant about what needed to be done. He did it a week later in his office with just some local freezing and it was amazing! No problems at all. I would never see another Dr for surgery. Dr J is truly above the rest! Even his peers give him awards. His office is full of them! Big hugs to him and his staff for turning this in a happy ending from a scary start.
