Understanding Moles

“Moles” occur all over the body. Doctors call them nevi or a nevus. Some moles are attractive and even famous. Some moles are not. Almost everyone has a spot or a mole they wish to have removed. These areas can be carefully and finely removed and then meticulously repaired to minimize the scar.

Occasionally these moles to be removed may have some premalignancy risk factors to it and which case they should be sent to laboratory for pathologic review.  Dr. Jacobsen sends these to the pathology laboratory after removal to ensure these are not cancers for you if this is needed.

These moles are generally not covered by your health insurance. But if your family physician or your dermatologist feels the mole or the spot is “suspicious” for skin cancer it may be covered for you.

Otherwise Dr. Jacobsen has a simple fee schedule for you to have these removed in the office. Everyone of course is concerned about the scar left behind. The scar will always be there but it is our goal to make the scar not noticeable to your family and friends or at the very least less noticeable than the mole itself was. We have a “scar” care program to help minimize the scar appearance after your procedure. Excising the mole will leave a scar.  The intent is to have the scar be less distracting to the eye and then the mole was itself.  Dr. Jacobsen uses very fine suture material and fine surgical technique to provide this service for you.  He requires however a great deal of fast that he is scar care after the procedure to help you have a favorable scar.  We have various measures to help you with the scar and its recovery to give his most favorable scar possible.  We will show you how to take care of the scar and incision to prevent an unfavorable scar, hypertrophic scar or keloid scar. We will show you how to massage this area at least 100 times a day in a firm circular motion. We will show you how to utilize any kind of moisturizing cream that has vitamin E in it and possibly hydrocortisone which can assist in reducing the incidence of unfavorable hypertrophic scar or keloid.  Vitamin E oil is also effective but can be somewhat messy as it is quite oily for them to use and can get on their clothing.  We will advise you to use sunblock, SPF >30 on any portion of the scar that is exposed to the sun, which may cause the scar to become hyperpigmented in an unfavorable way.  We will explained to use that even when they are indoors or in a car the ultraviolet light can pass through into their environment causing hyperpigmentation of the scar. So, it is important to wear the SPF >30 sunblock even when they are indoors or driving.  We will show you that silicone sheeting can be utilized for scar care as well.  This can be purchased and most local drugstore and silicone bandages that can be placed on smaller scars.  Larger or longer scars may require a custom silicone pads placed which can be obtained from a local medical supply store or a prosthetic store.  We will give you a brochure for care of the incisional scar management when you come into see us.

  • review rating 5  I couldn't be happier with my procedure. Dr. J has the most kind and relaxing manner and he is the ultimate professional. I had a fatty tumor on my forehead that he removed, as well as breast reconstruction. The breast reconstruction was overdue as I had breast cancer with multiple lumpectomies, biopsies and radiation. It left the tissue hard and my old implant like a rock. He was able to correct all of the problems and I'm much happier with my appearance. Although you may find it odd at first that you can't get anyone by phone their response time is amazing. I emailed the office on a Sunday afternoon that I had a problem and within ten minutes (no exaggeration) I had a text back that a prescription had been called in to my pharmacy. I've had procedures with other doctors around the Valley and never had an experience more pleasant, nor one which I was happier with the results.

  • review rating 5  I've had four visits with Dr. Jacobsen over the past 2.5 years, the first after the removal of 1/3 of my bottom lip from skin cancer, and the last for a biopsy of possible skin cancer on my nose. Each time, he has treated me with kindness and respect, and also had a level of confidence that made me feel relaxed with whatever he thought best for the particular problem. Thus far, the results have proven him correct. He has quickly become my go-to for any problem or condition that may create a cosmetic "issue". His office and staff make you feel welcomed and comfortable, and he promptly and generously responds to questions or concerns by email. One visit and you'll find these things out yourself.
