Understanding Moles

“Moles” occur all over the body. Doctors call them nevi or a nevus. Some moles are attractive and even famous. Some moles are not. Almost everyone has a spot or a mole they wish to have removed. These areas can be carefully and finely removed and then meticulously repaired to minimize the scar.

Occasionally these moles to be removed may have some premalignancy risk factors to it and which case they should be sent to laboratory for pathologic review.  Dr. Jacobsen sends these to the pathology laboratory after removal to ensure these are not cancers for you if this is needed.

These moles are generally not covered by your health insurance. But if your family physician or your dermatologist feels the mole or the spot is “suspicious” for skin cancer it may be covered for you.

Otherwise Dr. Jacobsen has a simple fee schedule for you to have these removed in the office. Everyone of course is concerned about the scar left behind. The scar will always be there but it is our goal to make the scar not noticeable to your family and friends or at the very least less noticeable than the mole itself was. We have a “scar” care program to help minimize the scar appearance after your procedure. Excising the mole will leave a scar.  The intent is to have the scar be less distracting to the eye and then the mole was itself.  Dr. Jacobsen uses very fine suture material and fine surgical technique to provide this service for you.  He requires however a great deal of fast that he is scar care after the procedure to help you have a favorable scar.  We have various measures to help you with the scar and its recovery to give his most favorable scar possible.  We will show you how to take care of the scar and incision to prevent an unfavorable scar, hypertrophic scar or keloid scar.
