What Is A Facelift?
During the procedure, your surgeon will pull back a flap of skin on either side of your face. The tissues that are located below your skin are then altered. These alterations help your face to look more youthful. Excess skin is then removed before the flaps of skin are sutured closed.
Some people undergo a neck lift (also known as a “Platysmaplasty”) at the same time as a facelift. This procedure helps to reduce sagging and some fat deposits on the neck. Again, these alterations can help you to look more youthful.
Please note, a facelift will not decrease any wrinkles or fine lines on your face, neither will it reduce sun damage. Other procedures can deal with these issues. A facelift can help you to have a more youthful appearance as the skin on the face will be tighter.
Are You A Good Candidate For A Facelift?
If you are considering undergoing a facelift, your surgeon will advise you as to who is a good candidate. The following factors might be taken into account when you’re considering having a facelift:
- Your physical health
Your physical health is very important. Being in good health means that you are less likely to have any problems recovering from surgery. If you have pre-existing medical conditions, it could mean you might need to have less invasive procedures. The healthier you are, the faster you will recover, and the better your results will be.
- The condition of your skin
Your face should ideally still have some elasticity and flexibility. When it is pinched, your skin should still be able to bounce back a little. If your skin has some sun damage or you’re a smoker, there’s always a chance that your facelift might not be as successful as you’d hoped. Please speak to your surgeon about how your lifestyle could impact the success of your facelift.
- Your face’s bone structure
If your face is already quite balanced, any facelift results are likely to be good. If you have a small chin, for example, you might want to undergo chin surgery (also known as “genioplasty”) before you have a facelift. This is because a facelift might not give you the results you desire.
Remember, a facelift is there to make you look younger, it can’t change the shape of your face very much.
- Your expectations
It’s important that you have some realistic expectations. While many people wish to look young again, it’s not always possible to achieve this. This is because a facelift can take up to 10 years off your face. If you want to look a lot younger, you might have to undergo other cosmetic procedures first.
Ideally, it should not be immediately obvious that you have had a facelift. A facelift should make you look like a slightly younger version of yourself.
About Our Facelift Procedure
We want you to be fully aware of every step of the procedure. This is why we will talk with you about the procedure, what’s involved, and what risks there are.
Before the procedure you might have:
- A medical examination – This is to ensure that you are healthy enough to undergo the procedure. The surgeon will also ask you about your medical history, and your drug, alcohol, and tobacco use.
- A review of your medication – This is important as some medications can affect your recovery time and the anesthesia.
- A facial examination – A facial examination will involve your surgeon taking photographs of your face. Photographs will be taken from a range of angles. You might also have some close-up photographs taken. This is to ensure that the surgeon can determine the best possible options for your surgery. For example, you might need more tissue tightened in one area of your face than another.
During the procedure:
The procedure will involve elevating your skin and tightening some of the underlying muscles and tissues. The fat around your face and neck could be redistributed, removed, or sculpted. This will be performed under local or general anesthesia.
Once this stage of the procedure has taken place, any excess skin will be removed, and the wound will be taped or stitched closed.
After the procedure:
You might be in some pain and discomfort, this is perfectly normal. You could also experience some numbness, bruising, and swelling, again, this is perfectly normal. Your surgeon will make sure you know what to expect when you’re recovering from surgery. They will also tell you what you need to look out for.
Recovering:
You will need to recover for at least 2 days after the surgery. You should rest while ensuring your head is elevated. Please make sure you also take any pain medication that has been prescribed to you. If you wish, you can also use cool packs to help reduce swelling and ease any pain.
Follow up appointments:
You will be required to attend follow up appointments. These appointments take place to make sure you’re recovering properly. You can expect to see your surgeon the day after surgery, two to three days later, and in the next seven days. You might also need additional appointments so that your progress can be monitored.
It can take a month or two for you to fully recover from your facelift procedure. However, if you follow your surgeon’s instructions, you are more likely to recover quickly and with fewer complications.
Your surgeon will also tell you how you can protect the incision area and hide it from others, should you wish to.
