Understanding Moles & Mole Removal
“Moles” occur all over the body. Doctors call them nevi or a nevus. Some moles are attractive and even famous, and others some people may wish to have removed. Almost everyone has a spot or a mole they wish remove. These areas can be carefully and finely removed. Then meticulously repaired by a Restorative and Cosmetic Surgeon to minimize the scar.
Occasionally moles may have some premalignancy risk factors to it, in which case they should be sent to laboratory for pathologic review. Dr. Jacobsen sends these to the pathology laboratory after removal to ensure cancers are not present if need be. Moles are generally not covered by your health insurance. But if your family physician or dermatologist feels the mole or the spot is “suspicious” or thinks skin cancer may otherwise be present. This service may be covered for you.
In the case that neither is covered Dr. Jacobsen has a simple fee schedule to have these removed for you in the office. Everyone, of course, is concerned about the scar left behind. The scar will always be there, but it is our goal to make the blemish as least noticeable as possible to you, your family and friends.
We have a care program to help minimize the appearance of any scarring after your procedure. Excising the mole will leave a blemish, but the intent is to have the scar be less distracting to the eye than the mole itself. Dr. Jacobsen uses very fine suture material and fine surgical technique to provide this service for you. However, a great deal of aftercare is ultimately responsible for the end result and healing of your wound.
We have various measures to help you minimize scarring and recovery to leave the most favorable scar possible. We will show you how to care for the incision and scar to prevent any unfavorable scarring, hypertrophic or keloid scar. Showing you how to massage this area in a firm circular motion and how to utilize vitamin E moisturizing cream and possibly Hydrocortisone. Which can assist in reducing the incidence of any unfavorable hypertrophic scar or keloid.
Vitamin E oil is also effective but can be somewhat messy. As it is quite fluid and can transfer to clothing. For healing we advise using sunblock, SPF >30 on any portion of the exposed scar to the sun, which may cause hyperpigmentation in an unfavorable way. Even while indoors or driving. Ultraviolet light can pass through their environment causing hyperpigmentation of the scar. So, it is always important to wear the SPF >30 sunblock.
Larger or longer scars may require a custom silicone pads placed which can be obtained from a local medical supply store or a prosthetic store. We will give you a brochure for care of the incisional scar management when you come into see us.
Dr. Jacobsen can help you with your mole removal and a finely done repair of your body and skin. The charges for removing the mole start at $600 for 1 mole and $300 for any additional mole. Up to 2 moles to be removed in one sitting in one appointment in our office.
